Environmental Advocacy & Behavioral Alignment

I designed a high-fidelity interactive experience to address the critical decline of Posidonia Oceanica in the Mediterranean. By applying Action Mapping and collaborating with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), I transformed complex biological data into a "Safe-to-Fail" learning environment that prepares tourists and locals to make environmentally conscious decisions in real-time.
Posidonia Oceanica is the biological engine of the Mediterranean, responsible for water clarity and coastal stability. However, it faces extinction due to a lack of "Environmental Literacy" among the 200+ million annual tourists.
The Friction: Most environmental education is passive and text-heavy, failing to influence real-world behavior (like where to anchor a boat).
Stakeholder Gap: Information often stays within scientific circles, failing to reach the "end-user" (the tourist) in a format that is digestible and actionable.
Educating tourists and locals on the protection of Posidonia can be the key to avoiding its disappearance. As a solution, I propose a crash course with simple interactions and animations that explains the key aspects of the Posidonia Oceanica, including what it is, why is it important, its main threats, and what can people do to protect it.
Cognitive Scaffolding: Breaking down the "Why" and "How" of protection into bite-sized, interactive modules.
Just-in-Time Job Aids: Downloadable infographics designed to be used on-site (on boats or beaches).
1. Research & Performance Analysis (Action Mapping)
Leveraging my background in Anthropology, I began by analyzing the cultural and social drivers of environmental neglect. I collaborated with a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to move past "information dumping" and instead focused on the specific actions needed to save the species. We prioritized high-impact behaviors over low-value trivia.
2. Storyboarding & Environmental Fidelity
I designed a visual storyboard that prioritized UX Consistency. By testing the logic tree with non-experts early in the process, I ensured the "Information Architecture" was intuitive. I chose Articulate Storyline 360 to allow for deeper immersion through variable-based interactions and personalized feedback loops.
3. Visual Design & Mediterranean Aesthetics
The visual strategy was built on "Restorative Design"—using a Mediterranean color palette (Deep Sea Blues and Turquoise) to create an emotional connection to the content. I prioritized a clean, distraction-free UI to lower cognitive load, ensuring the learner remained focused on the behavioral cues.
4. Development & Deployment (Technical Stack)
The interaction features:
Audio-Visual Immersion: Custom soundscapes and voice-over characters to humanize the data.
Interactive Modality: Tab-based discovery and animated video sequences to maintain high engagement.
Cloud Infrastructure: The final package was deployed via AWS, ensuring global accessibility and low-latency performance.
5. Performance Tools (Job Aids)
The project concludes with a dual-purpose Job Aid:
Summary: A high-retention infographic for long-term memory.
Field Checklist: A printable guide for tourists to use while vacationing, translating digital learning into physical, environmentally-safe action.
This project confirmed that detail is the difference between awareness and action. By adding elements like localized voice-overs and "Safe-to-Fail" scenarios, I elevated the project from a basic presentation to a specialized behavioral tool.
Next Strategic Move: For future iterations, I intend to integrate xAPI tracking to measure exactly which "Action Items" users struggle with the most, allowing for data-driven refinements to the instructional strategy
